India Blue Peafowl

The India Blue is THE peacock - the iconic male with the iridescent blue body and the 4-6 foot tail of 'eye' feathers. Loud, large, free-ranging, lives 20+ years. Spectacular yard ornamental but not for small properties.

History & origin

Native to the Indian subcontinent. National bird of India. Domesticated by ancient civilizations - mentioned in Sanskrit texts dating to 1500 BCE. Brought to Europe by Alexander the Great's armies. Symbols of royalty and wealth across Asia and Europe. Modern peafowl have changed little from wild stock - they remain semi-wild even after generations of captive breeding. Lifespan 25-30 years in captivity.

Space: Need 8x8x8 ft minimum aviary OR free-range on 1+ acre. They WILL fly to neighboring property.

Feeding: Game bird starter, then mixed grain + greens + insects. Free-range birds eat 50% from foraging.

Health: Susceptible to blackhead disease - keep separate from chickens or treat both with anthelmintic.

Climate: Zones 6-10. Tolerate cold to 10F with windbreak; native to subtropical India so prefer warm.

Buying tips

  • Cocks don't develop full train until age 3. Yearlings are spotted but not show-quality.
  • Hens cost less than cocks ($150-300 vs $300-800 for cocks).
  • Imprinting before 8 weeks dramatically improves tameness.
  • Peafowl roost high - tall trees within 100 ft = guaranteed escape route.
